Monthly Leader day Seminars
The core of Leadership Eastside's programming occurs during monthly leadership seminars. These day-long learning opportunities focus on understanding and strengthening each leadership capability. Sessions include various teaching and learning strategies including self-assessments, group discussions, guest speakers, instructional presentations, professional readings, small group discussions and other activities. Sessions use critical Eastside community issues as a context for developing understanding of and proficiency with each leader capability.
Leadership Eastside PRogram
Leadership Eastside's offering is designed for those with an interest, curiosity and desire to enrich their community leadership service. Year One program activities include a class Welcome Reception, a September Kickoff Retreat and Community Connections Issues Forum and monthly day seminars (October through May), and a graduation celebration in late May. Additionally, all class members participate in community projects throughout the year with project presentations in May. Year Two and Three support includes mentoring, class re-connect events and often continuation of Community Projects.
Curriculum Framework
Leadership Eastside's unique curriculum is built around the development of six community leader capabilities through a focus on the top issues facing the Eastside region.
- Sustaining Stewardship:
Serve as a steward of commitments and conversations that ensure healthy, inclusive communities where everyone can proudly work, live, and play.
- • Display transparent leadership characterized by integrity, credibility, tenacity and optimism
- • Inspire others to act, empower them to take initiative, and encourage them to “seize the dream”
- • Support others in their contributions to the region – in shaping a collective destiny
- Valuing Dialogue:
Embrace the voices, perspectives, and ideas of others to increase mutual understanding -- and use that mutual understanding to create new solutions together.
- • Seek first to understand, and encourage others to do the same
- • Listen generously; engage others in telling their stories and sharing their wisdom
- • Foster regard for others; leverage that regard to deepen connections, constructively manage differences, and build relationships and partnerships
Identify and illuminate the ways in which seemingly disparate actions and events affect each other over time and across space.
- • Think holistically (and systemically) to see interrelationships that can inform our understanding of - and our approach to - complex issues
- • Search for underlying causes and consequences that may have future impacts
- • Seek broad perspective, welcome paradox, and acknowledge multiple truths
- Envisioning Possibilities:
Imagine interpretations and alternatives that expand options, ignite passion, and create opportunities for excellence and progress.
- • Visualize a vibrant future, and create the same picture for others to see
- • Challenge “the way things are done” in ways that encourage the heart and engender excitement in those doing the work
- • Create conditions that help others be successful in achieving their full potential and promise
- Building Community:
Work with diverse individuals - with both shared and competing priorities - to find common purpose and shared ownership of outcomes.
- • Invite new voices, emphasize belonging, and learn and grow together
- • Work collaboratively and respectfully to build partnerships for mutual gain
- • Engage and enroll others in meaningful ways to accomplish needed regional change
- Influencing Outcomes:
Inform, support, and help shape decisions that promote desired results.
- • Promote debate and vigorous examination of options, then move to decisions and actions
- • Employ persuasive strategies ethically and effectively to accomplish goals
- • Take risks where appropriate; encourage “possibility thinking” and implement trial projects
